Allied Whale Summer Internship As part of Bar Harbor’s College of the Atlantic, Allied Whale studies the population and foraging habits of fin whales and humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine. Summer internship fieldwork may involve collecting and analyzing data and conducting various research studies. Interns can expect to spend time aboard a 26′ cuddy-cabin boat, as well as in the mainland office. Interns may also choose to work on other projects with the Marine Mammal Stranding Response Program or the Bar Harbor Whale Museum. Marine Environmental Research Institute Summer Internship MERI is located in Blue Hill, near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. MERI is a research and educational center. Research includes the study of marine pollution, its effects on marine mammals, and the effects of human consumption of toxic fish. MERI has an educational gallery that is open to the public and available for school field trips. Two types of summer internship programs are available at MERI. The Research Internship is for undergraduate and graduate students who are studying for a career as a marine biologist or other environmental scientist. The current research project is a study of various marine water sites, including sampling and analysis. Interns will be required to work in the field and in the laboratory. This internship is full-time from April to October. The Education Internship is for undergraduate students who wish to become teachers of subjects like marine biology, ocean sciences, and environmental sciences. Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Summer Internship Located in West Boothbay Harbor, this laboratory studies the microbiology, phytoplankton, higher organisms, ecology, and climate change. Two summer internship programs are available. One internship project will continue a comparison study of hatchery-reared lobsters and wild lobsters. The other internship will begin a new project to study the spawning and fertilization of giant sea scallops. Both internship programs will involve lab work and intensive field studies that will be physically demanding. Summer intern applicants must be SCUBA certified and have all equipment, except tanks.
